CLUB RUNNERS DO WELL AT SEVEN HILLS CHALLENGE

What is the Seven Hills of Edinburgh ?

Every year since 1980, on the 3rd Sunday in June, a few hundred hardy individuals take part in one of the most unusual running events in the country, The Seven Hills of Edinburgh — a combination of road-running, cross-country, hill-running, and urban orienteering… 14 miles in length and with 2200 feet of ascent/descent.
It attracts runners of all ages and all abilities — from the leading distance-runners who get round in 100 minutes, to the more modest performers who may take up to 4 hours. But they all enjoy the satisfaction of completing one of the most scenic and challenging of sporting courses.
Runners have the choice of two races in which to take part.
The seriously-fit should enter “The Race”. Those of more modest ability (above 1 hour 40 for a half-marathon, say) can enter “The Challenge” (starting half an hour in advance).
Lothian RC fielded two runner’s in the ‘Race’ and six in the ‘Challenge’.
Graeme Ackland and Martin Leadbetter contested the Race with Graeme finishing an excellent 31st overall and 2nd in the M50 category in 1 hour 58m 52s. Martin finished 152nd in[ 2 h 35m 08s] 181 of the 187 starters finished the ‘Race’.
In the ‘Challenge’, Euan McInnes was not only the first club runner home but the overall winner crossing the finish line in 2h 12m 35s, which was 12 minutes quicker than his 2012 time. He was followed home by 6th Paul Young [2:15.37], 15th & 4thF Christine Mac Varish [2:20.09], 18th Finlay Slane[2:20.59], 83rd Shona Young[2:44.51] 162nd Leanne Webster[2:58.19]. 260 of the 268 starters completed the ‘Challenge’ course.
