SHGA ‘OUTSTANDING FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR’ AWARD FOR MHAIRI

Lothian Running Club’s Mhairi Inglis has been rewarded for a successful season on the Highland Games circuit by being named as the Scottiish Hghland Games Associations[SHGA] ‘Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year’ for 2010.
This was confirmed at the recent AGM of the association in Perth recently.
Mhairi kicked off her season at Markinch in Fife at the start of June and performed consistently throughout until Pitlochry Games in mid September.
One of her best days during the campaign came at Inverkeithing Games when she showed her liking for the only red ash track on the circuit by winning both the Open 800 metres and 1600 metres Handicaps.
One of her best runs of the season came at the Perth Games on the South Inch where she held off a big field of runners to win the Open 800 metres Handicap.
The second year Glasgow Caledonian University student also had numerous second and third places which amassed her enough points to finish in 4th place in the SHGA season long points league for middle distance events and finish as joint runner up in the Fife Highland Games Associations [FHGA] equivalent.
The SHGA Outstanding Female award is relatively new but has been won in the past by athletes who have gone on to represent both Gt Britain and Scotland at international level.
Stacey Downie[2003], Gemma Nicol[2006] and Mhairi’s own sister Sarah who won the award as a youth athlete in 2005.
This will be the third time the award has gone to a Lothian runner with Mhairi succeeding Lauren Arbuckle who took the title 12 months ago.
Club runners also did well in the now confirmed final placings in both the SHGA and FHGA points leagues. Sprinter Darren Thomson won the Fife league for events up to 400 metres and finished runner up in the Scottish equivalent.
Robert Inglis also had a consistent season winning the Fife league for events over 400 metres and finishing second in the Fife table.
Most consistent performer in the youth events on the circuit this year was 11 year old Hannah Stewart who was runner up in the Scottish league and third in the Fife.
All the aforementioned will receive their awards at the forthcoming SHGA/FHGA annual presentation dinner in Glenrothes on November 27th.
