The Lothian Running Club ladies team excelled at Saturday’s Scottish Athletics National Cross Country Relay Championship’s at Cumbernauld to finish in 6th place out of a total of 60 teams from all over the country in the Senior Women’s Race.
The team had to alter the line-up from the trio that claimed silver medals at the East District Championship’s two weeks earlier, with Chloe Cox unavailable Lana Turnbull joined Sarah Inglis and Edel Mooney for the 3 x 4000 metres event.
It was Lana who led the team off and produced a fine run to cover the 4k course in 17 minutes 28 seconds to hand over to second stage runner Sarah Inglis in 20th place.
Sarah was quickly into her running and was soon overhauling a number of her rivals. Her determined effort saw her produce the 4th quickest second leg run of the day of 15 minutes 57 seconds. This hauled the team right up to 9th place as she handed over to the experienced Edel Mooney to run the anchor leg. The Irish internationalist produced a power packed run as she set about making in-roads on those up ahead of her.
And such was the quality of her performance her finishing time of 15 minutes 13 seconds was the second fastest overall of nearly 200 runners on the day. The trio’s combined time of 48 minutes 38 seconds saw them finish in an excellent 6th place behind winners Central AC. The club’s Saran Jones ran a solo leg in 18 minutes 55 seconds.
Lothian fielded two teams in the Senior Mens 4 x 4000 metres contest, 103 teams lined up with the club’s ‘A’ team finishing in 58th place with first leg runner Max McNeil recording a quick 13 minutes 54 seconds.
