Sarah runner up in Armagh

Sarah Inglis finished in an excellent 2nd place in the Women’s 3k road race at the Armagh International on Thursday evening. 5 Scots finished in the top 15.

Scotland also won the women’s team event.

International Ladies 3k:

The first international event of the evening was the International Ladies 3k, which also incorporated the Open Ladies event.  As the starting horn sounded, the record breaking field made their way towards the picturesque Armagh Gaol – very little split the ladies in the early stages, but Pippa Woolven (Run Fast) featured at the head of a huge lead group.  As the race progressed, Charlene Thomas (Wakefield & District AC) and Laura Whittle (Scotland) moved into contention.  As the athletes went through the bell and into the final 1k, previous winner of the event Laura Whittle looked as if she was going to take charge, having moved to the front of the still sizable group.  

 However, in the latter stages, Irish Steeplechase hero Sara Treacy (Ireland) worked her way through the front runners and into the mix – in an epic sprint finish, it was Sara who came to the fore, powering across the line in 9:18.20 (1st place).  A late charge and strong finish from Scotland’s Sarah Inglis saw her claim the runners up spot ahead of international team mate Laura Whittle, with Sarah running 9:19.01 (2nd place) and Laura 9:19.27 (3rd place).  Letterkenny AC athlete Ann-Marie McGlynn continued her recent run of good form as she led the local runner’s home in 9:23.64 (6th place).  In all, an amazing 29 athletes broke the famous 10:00 barrier for the 3k distance, this was 16 more than in 2015, again proving the increase in quality which the event is attracting.
