ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland – Led by Sarah Inglis (Falkirk, Scotland), who finished fifth overall and first amongst Canada West athletes, the Trinity Western women’s cross country team made Spartans history by finishing second overall at the CIS national championships for the first time ever, while also capturing their second straight Canada West championship Saturday at St. John’s Pippy Park Golf Course.
Running in winds that peaked near 110 km per hour (!), accompanied by rain at sometimes hail-like conditions, the Spartans bettered their fourth place finish from last year’s national championships as the second place finish marks TWU’s best ever result. It’s also the first time in the cross country program’s history that TWU has won back-to-back conference titles.
After finishing 29th overall at last year’s CIS championships, Inglis came back this year on a mission and finished the six kilometre race in 22:58.3 to finish fifth in the CIS and first in the conference. The first place finish amongst Canada West athletes earns Inglis the Canada West Female Athlete of the Year award for cross country.
