Club trio tackle New York Marathon
Three of Lothian Running Club’s veteran female members were among a huge field of 50,266 finishers in Sunday’s 44th TCS New York City Marathon.
Christine MacVarish, Shona Young and Pauline Hiughes who have all run marathons before were the clubs representatives in what is regarded as one of the World’s top marathons.
The marathon begins on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and finishes in Central Park after 26.2 miles. All five boroughs are covered by the race.
The runners had to contend with a strong wind so it was no surprise that none of the LRC trio bettered there previous bests for the distance.
Christine MacVarish was only a couple of minutes outside her PB which she set in London earlier in the year as she crossed the finish line in 3 hours 24 minutes 22 seconds.
Shona Young who was incredibly running her 6th marathon of the year finished in 3 hours 36 minutes 27 seconds, Shona had previously run the marathons at London, Kielder, Loch Ness, Strathearn and Windermere.
Pauline Hiughes who also has previous marathon experience having run the London and Edinburgh events in the past completed the course in 4 hours 46 minutes 34 seconds.
