Goatfell Hill Race

On 17th May 2014, Dave Berrill and I made the round trip to Arran to compete in the Goatfell hill race.

The race starts in Brodick, has a 2 mile tarmac section and then climbs 800m+ in 3 miles, to the summit of Goatfell, before returning to the start. It’s a pretty runnable course and I think both of us ran most of the way to the bottom of the summit dome, before scrambling, with intermittent jogging, on the steep rocky sections.

The race was won by Finlay Wild (Lochaber AC) in 1h16m07s, 6 minutes (SIX!) clear of the rest of the field. The race starts with a lap of the football fields at the start and Finlay had a 10m lead by the end of the lap. Sarah Mackenzie (Lochaber AC) won the women’s race in 1h36m10s.

In our race within a race, Dave beat me to the summit by a minute or two after slowly pulling away on the climb but I managed to catch and overtake him on the descent 🙂

Results below:

1st Finlay Wild (Lochaber AC) 1h16m07s

25th Sarah Mackenzie (Lochaber AC) 1h36m10s

29th John Malcolm (Lothian) 1h37m04s

33rd David Berrill (Lothian) 1h38m42s

135 ran… several of whom ended with bloodied hands and knees due to the challenging rocky terrain!
