WESTERN WASHINGTON INVITATIONAL
INGLIS FINISHES FIRST, JACKSON SECOND AT WESTERN WASHINGTON CLASSIC
BELLINGHAM, Washington – The Trinity Western women’s cross country team continues to impress as the tandem of Sarah Inglis (Falkirk, Scotland) and Alison Jackson (Vermilion, Alta.) finished first and second respectively to lead the way for the Spartans on a strong day at the Western Washington Classic at East Lake Padden Park Saturday.
The first-year Inglis, who won her second cross country race in a row after finishing first at the University of Washington Sundodger Open in September, won the six kilometre race in a time of 21:31. Jackson, who is in her fourth year at TWU and also finished second in last year’s event, crossed the line 17 seconds behind, in 21:48.
As a team, the women finished third overall and second amongst universities with 80 points. The Spartans finished one spot behind Simon Fraser (78 points) but also one spot above Victoria (84 points) and two spots clear of UBC (99 points).
The Spartans men, who were led by Levi Neufeld (Winnipeg) and Joel DeSchiffart (Nanaimo, B.C.), who finished 10th and 12th respectively in the 10 kilometre race, also finished third in the team standings with 85 points, trailing Western Washington (15 points) and UBC (61 points).
“We are extremely pleased with both the men’s and women’s performances today,” said Spartans coach Laurier Primeau. “It confirmed what we already knew in that the women have some great elite performers but we need to continue to work on the depth and the men’s program has some great depth and some really solid performers from one to seven.
“The highlights for us were obviously the first and second place finishes on the women’s side but also, on the men’s side, we had a really nice breakthrough day for our three front-runners. Levi, who had a couple of DNFs in his last couple meets, ran really well. Joel provided some great consistency for us and Blair Johnston (White Rock, B.C.), who has suffered through some really tough illnesses over the last eight months, looks to be coming out the other side and that’s really encouraging for us.”
Beyond Inglis and Jackson, the Spartans women’s team saw Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) finish 14th in 22:35, Fiona Benson (Dawson Creek, B.C.) finish 33rd in 23:03, Meg Harradine (Langley) finish 54th in 23:57, Katelynn Ramage (Nanaimo, B.C.) finish 78th in 25:24 and Amy Wood (Quesnel, B.C.) finish 93rd in 27:04.
On the men’s side, Neufeld finished in 32:32 while DeSchiffart crossed the line in 32:36. After the Spartans top two, Chris Voth (Abbotsford, B.C.) was 28th in 33:05, Johnston was 32nd in 33:16, Declan White (South Surrey, B.C.) was 47th in 33:57, Mihai Prajea (Calgary) was 48th in 33:58 and Adam Marshall was 85th in 36:08.
The Spartans next competition will be the B.C. Cross Country Championships, which is Oct. 26 in Abbotsford. Following that, TWU will travel to London, Ont. for the CIS Championships Nov. 8.
