Borrowdale Fell Race
I had a reasonable run around the Borrowdale Fell Race on Saturday 3rd August. This is quite a challenging race in the Lake District at 17 miles with 7000ft climb/descent taking in Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Dale Head and a few other peaks. Anyone who knows the area will know the terrain is pretty rough with boulder fields, scree runs and other technical sections.
My three goals for the race were 1) to make it around the course without breaking anything 2) go faster than my 2012 jog around in 4h42m 3) to beat club-mate Dave Berrill’s time of 3h59m from 2010!
I managed all three (sorry Dave), finishing in 3h38m and in 47th place from the 315 or so folks who made it to the finish line. Most pleasing statistics were beating all the women (doesn’t happen often… esp. not in hill races!) and I think I might have been first Scot (not that impressive, there were only a handful of us!).
A really good weekend and highly recommended race. There’s a cracking video on YouTube of the infamous Scafell Pike corridor route descent … one to look up if you’ve a spare five minutes.
